Our thanks is due

Who knows why a man bequeaths his money to others? To attempt an answer is to conjecture.  It must remain his secret... and God's. Let it be, then.  It is with our Barry-Robinson Boys--we can only be certain that our benefactor, Frederick J Robinson, must find his pleasure posthumously in our success.

If we find ourselves unable in a human way to thank him, we can only turn to our success--the enrichment of the boys given to our care--and offer it back to him as our constant, prayerful thanks for his generosity.

In 1924 Frederick J. Robinson provided in his will for the establishment of a home and school for orphaned boys in memory of his grandfather, James Barry—a prominent citizen of Norfolk (1804-1867).

The late Reverend Andrew J. Brennan, D.D., Bishop of Richmond on December 8, 1933, dedicated Barry-Robinson.  T. David Fitzgibbons designed all the buildings, including the chapel, built in 1956, the chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The home opened with 30 boys between the ages of 7 to 15, and was entrusted to the Benedictine monks of Latrobe, Pennsylvania with Reverend Sylvester Healy, O.S.B. as its first director.

In 1961, the school was changed into a high school that began a full 5-year high school curriculum.

In June 1967, the Franciscan Fathers of the Province of the Immaculate Conception assumed the administration of the home and school.

School Song.

High above the bay blue waters in amongst the trees,

Stands the school that lives forever in our memories.

Barry Robinson Funds New School

First New Catholic School In Norfolk

In 50 Years Recently Dedicated

Bishop Francis X Dilorenzo, Bishop of the Diocese of Richmond, officially dedicated the new Saint Patrick Catholic School with a Dedication Mass on January 29, 2006.

Saint Patrick, the first new Catholic school to open in Norfolk in 50 years, is located at 1000 Bolling Avenue in the Larchmont section of Norfolk.  The school originally was housed in the former DePaul School of Nursing complex.  Students were welcomed to the new, six building campus on January 9.

Currently the school enrolls students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.  The seventh grade will be added in September of this year and the eighth grade in September of 2007.  Full enrollment will be two sections of each grade with a maximum of 20 students per grade for a total capacity of 400 students.

The campus consists of a two story academic building with 24 elementary and middle school classrooms, full service computer and science lab, a suite of art and music rooms and facilities for pre-school children.

A state-of-the-art library/media center with 14,000 books, a distance learning room for video conferencing, teleconferencing and other interactive disciplines and a computer lab for electronic research.

A 250-seat dining hall, 350-seat theater/auditorium, 250-seat high school size gymnasium, two lacrosse/soccer fields, a full sized baseball/softball field and a Administration Building.

Fully funded by the James Barry Robinson trust, Saint Patrick is designed to fill a void in Catholic elementary education that has existed on Norfolk’s Westside since closing of parish schools at Saint Mary’s, Sacred Heart and Blessed Sacrament over the past 20 years.

Founded in 1933, the mission of the James Barry Robinson Home for Boys Trust is to help children in Norfolk and Hampton Roads cities benefit from a high quality Catholic education.  The current trustees have the stated goal of having a diverse student body with an affordable tuition.

For further information about Saint Patrick, call George Raiss, Director of Development at 213-0825.
